Elder Olaf Bjornaa grew up in Batchewana Village and was taught fishing by his father. Fishing became his main source of livelihood, including ice fishing in the winter. In his younger days, Oluf also used to make boats. He has never purchased a boat and the last boat he built was 40 feet long. Olaf believes that fishing is very important to the people of Batchewana because it serves as the source of their livelihood. Olaf has been in many meetings with government officials over the years seeking to obtain funding to support Batchewana’s fishing industry.
